Description: The Barnegat Inlet offers an incredible array of species to be photographed in the winter months. Strong currents make for great feeding grounds for many waterbirds. The Harlequin ducks may be the stars of the show but there are many species that can be photographed depending on the tides. Some of these species include long-tailed duck, purple sandpipers, ruddy turnstones, dunlin, black-bellied plovers, red-breasted mergansers, common eiders, atlantic brant, surf scoter, black scoter, gulls and more!
Lot of the birds are approachable on the jetty but a minimum focal length of 400mm is required. Focal lengths of 400-600mm will yield the best results. You can expect to get portraits of these birds but there should be plenty of opportunities to capture feeding behavior and flight shots as well. Depending on weather conditions, we may visit other locations close to Barnegat light to photograph other ducks and possibly raptors. If there is a cooperative Snowy Owl in the area we may attempt to photograph it as well.
During the tour you will learn the best camera and auto-focus settings for different situations. This is one of the most important aspects when it comes to photographing a moving subject. We will take time to discuss various techniques to increase your chances of success at this location. You will also learn the finer points of composition, image design and how to use the angle of light when photographing birds. There will be a couple of image critique sessions as well.
This tour is meant for intermediate to advance photographers that are willing to walk about a mile with their camera gear. The jetty, where most birds can be photographed from, has gaps between the rocks and needs to be traversed with care. This is especially true when carrying camera gear. It is essential that the participants are in good health and will not have trouble walking on the jetty with their camera gear. If you have any concerns or questions please contact us before signing up for the tour.
