Description: Please read all of the following before registering for the tour.

Known as the land of fire and ice, Iceland packs an amazing variety of photographic opportunities into a remote island the size of Virginia. Spectacular waterfalls, stunning coastlines, volcanic mountains, geo-thermal features, glacial lagoons, icebergs on a black sand beach, unique rock formations, nesting sea birds (including Atlantic Puffins) on cliff faces, Icelandic horses, quaint churches/villages, ancient settlements and much more will be added to your portfolio. This promises to be a trip to remember!

Nikhil has teamed up with Tom Field to co-lead this special tour.  Together they have refined an itinerary of Iceland highlights, plus some lesser-known gems.  Tom has a month’s experience in Iceland on guided and self-guided trips, and has photographed at each of the major locations two or more times.  Detailed briefing materials will prepare participants for the expected conditions: outfitting and selecting appropriate photo gear to bring.

Please note: While there will be field instruction, the nature of the locations we visit will have the group spread out at times. Nikhil and Tom will both help you get the images you want, but this tour is ideal for photographers that are comfortable using their cameras. This tour is NOT recommended for a beginner.

All participants should be in average health and able to do light hiking. If you have any medical concerns please contact us before registering.

Itinerary:

The itinerary will traverse throughout South and West Iceland, including a visit to the remote Westfjords. Most of the country’s unique attractions are accessible in these areas. Iceland’s weather can be unpredictable and dramatic (which is part of the visual appeal). The itinerary provides some flexibility to accommodate conditions, possibly repeating some locations for different weather or lighting. While we will make every effort to cover the locations in the itinerary, some modifications might be necessary due to conditions.

Day 1 - Wednesday, May 27, 2015
Arrive in Iceland (Keflavik/Reykjavik airport, code KEF). Transfer to downtown hotel, check in and meet at 4pm for orientation. Group dinner and some photography in the capital area to follow.  Those arriving on early flights could explore the waterfront near the hotel on foot, or join a bike or bus tour.  Reykjavik has a millennium of history and it’s easy to get around.

Day 2 - Thursday, May 28, 2015
Leave the big city behind and immediately head into a beautiful fjord on the way to Snaefellsnes Peninsula and Snaefellsjokull National Park. Opportunities to photograph sea cliffs, birds, coastal landscapes, black sand beaches, craggy mountains draped in clouds, hexagonal columns of basalt, etc. Spend the night at a remote hotel near the coastline with opportunity to explore on foot.

Day 3 - Friday, May 29, 2015
Photograph near our hotel in the morning, and then take the ferry across massive Breidafjordur to the Westfjords. The ferry ride presents opportunities for seascapes. On arrival in the Westfjords, we will photograph puffins and other sea birds nesting on soaring cliffs at the western tip of Europe. While the main attraction is the nesting birds, the landscape here can be spectacular. Spend the night at a quaint former boarding school (with modern accommodations for such a remote location).

Day 4 - Saturday, May 30, 2015
Continue photographing in the Westfjords until time to board the ferry back to Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Photograph nearby landscape attractions before turning in for the night in a city hotel.

Day 5 - Sunday, May 31, 2015
Leave West Iceland for the south, photographing our way inland to Gullfoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall.  Opportunities include geysers and other geothermal features, landscapes and waterfalls. Spend the night in a hotel near Gullfoss.

Day 6 - Monday, June 1, 2015
Travel to the south coast, visiting more grand waterfalls and landscapes on our way to Vik.  This southernmost point in Iceland has extreme weather and impressive landscapes to match, including a bird sanctuary over an enormous sea arch.  Overnight in a country hotel at Vik.

Day 7 - Tuesday, June 2, 2015
Photograph landscapes and birds near Vik in the morning before exploring a unique, hidden canyon.  We will travel to Skaftafell, in the Vatnajokull National Park, and then on to Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon. In the evening we will photograph icebergs in the lagoon and on the beach. Spend the night at a country hotel near Jokulsarlon.

Day 8 - Wednesday, June 3, 2015
Return to photograph the icebergs in different light and probably different conditions.  Return to Vik in the afternoon, where we will have a chance to photograph landscapes and possibly some nesting birds. Overnight at our country hotel in Vik.

Day 9 - Thursday, June 4, 2015
Photograph our way along the South Iceland coast to Reykjavik, with a flexible plan including geothermal areas, the Blue Lagoon, and those amazing waterfalls.  In the evening, we will proceed downtown for a farewell dinner. Overnight at hotel in Reykjavik.

Day 10 – Friday, June 5, 2015
