Description: Florida is the best state to photograph birds in the country! In the spring, Florida provides a host of photographic opportunities for a nature and wildlife photographer. Not only are there many exotic species of birds but they are far more acclimated to humans. This makes it easier for photographers to get much closer to the birds. For the first 3 days of the workshop we will be based just outside of Titusville. During this time we will mainly focus on the coastal areas east of Orlando which has beautiful beaches and wetland areas where a lot of wildlife and interesting landscapes can be found. We will then move to St. Augustine to visit a rookery of wading birds. At the rookery you can expect to photograph birds in spectacular breeding plumage and capture behavior such as courtship, nesting, feeding, flight and more. You will also photograph chicks of a few species as well. While the workshop will be geared toward avian photography it is likely that we will have opportunities to photograph some landscapes as well.
Species you may have opportunities to photograph are: great blue heron, great egret, snowy egret, cattle egret, little blue heron, tri-colored heron, green heron, american coot, moorhen, american bittern, least bittern, whistling duck, mottled duck, mallard, black necked stilt, sandhill crane, anhinga, limpkin, white ibis, glossy ibis, osprey, bald eagle, crested caracara, ruddy turnstone, willet, sanderling, roseate spoonbill, wood stork and more!
An orientation meeting and presentation will make participants aware of the various photo opps and how to take advantage of them. There will be plenty of field instruction. Techinical aspects like creating sharp images of birds in flight, creative opportunities of capturing birds in their environment, and a lot more will be covered. If you are fairly new to avian photography, you can expect to leave with a strong foundation of how to make quality images of birds. If you are an advanced photographer you will be introduced to new ideas and have plenty of opportunites make quality images to add to your portfolio. A group critique session will be give you a chance to receive feedback on your images and immediately make the required adjustments in the field.
Participants will need to purchase a photo pass ($79) to enter the rookery in St. Augustine. This is highly recommended as it allows early and late access to take advantage of the best light.
Participants are responsible for their own meals, transportation, and other incidentals. A group rate has been arranged with the hotels and will be available up to one month before the start of the workshop. Complete lodging info will be provided on registration.
