Description:

Join us as we photograph nesting wood storks, egrets, roseate spoonbills, Pelicans and more on this special birding by boat adventure in Southwest Florida!

With many birds displaying their full breeding plumage, the month of April is a great time to be in Southwest Florida and we have come up with an itinerary that can't be beat.

We will spend 3 solid days (6 full sessions) touring some of the best Rookery sites around Southwest Florida. We will see some of the best and most populated wading bird colonies on the west coast of Florida aboard a custom photography boat (captain chairs and all) giving us unparalleled access to the colonies with minimal disturbance to the birds.

These rookery island location shoots present a unique opportunity to photograph colonies of nesting roseate spoonbills, great blue herons, great egrets, anhingas, snowy egrets, cattle egrets, cormorants, white ibis, brown pelicans and more at the peak of activity with many chicks on the nest. And, best of all, this workshop is strictly limited to a maximum of 5 participants! Nikhil will be giving each of you plenty of personalized instruction on the boat.

During this workshop you will learn how best to use your auto focus settings as well as other tips to photograph birds in flight and in action as well as static portrait shots of birds in the nest. Whether you are photographing active or static birds, it is important to know how best to make consistently sharp images. We’ll also cover how to handhold short and long lenses, tracking birds in flight, and several other techniques.

NOTE: Participants should have a minimum focal length of 400mm. A longer telephoto and tripod is also recommended for any land-based locations we might visit in case of rain. A full gear and packing list will be provided.

During the mid-day classroom sessions, you will have a chance to get feedback on your photos. The feedback will help you make immediate adjustments for the next shoot. Nikhil will also cover the finer points of composition. Whether it is a tight portrait or a bird in its environment, the posture of the bird and the placement of elements in the image make the difference between a good photograph and an excellent one. There will also be a full session dedicated to post processing. Nikhil will share several techniques and tips to get the most out of your RAW capture, including processing techniques specific to avian photography.

You will receive plenty of help in the field to fine-tune your technique and implement what you have learned in the classroom.

Thursday, April 13

All day shooting rookeries from boats and classroom instruction

6:30 AM: Meet in the lobby for sunrise rookeries "boat" trip.

The morning shoot will be focused on similar opportunities as the previous day, although there will be an attempt to interpret the subject in a different way. Continue to hone your skills with a sunrise session to Roberts Bay Islands taking advantage of morning light and peak activity. Alternate morning shoot, depending on preference, at the Dot-Dash-Dit Colony at the mouth of the Braden River.

10:00 AM: Return to hotel

10:00 AM–2 PM: Break

2:00 PM–4:00 PM: Classroom session

4:30-8:00 PM: Sunset boat trip

Afternoon/sunset photo shoot to the Dot-Dash-Dit colony at the mouth of the Braden River. These three small mangrove islands (Dot, Dash, and Dit) are not only home to the only coastal colony of wood storks in the Tampa Bay area, but they are also home to spoonbills, 3 species of egret and a miriad of herons. The activity is astounding especially around sunset with many more birds coming in to roost.

Friday, April 14

All day shooting rookeries from boats and classroom instruction

6:30 AM: Meet in the lobby for sunrise rookeries "boat" trip.

The morning shoot will give us the flexibility to choose to return to either Robert's Bay or the mangrove islands of Dot, Dash and Dit, depending on activity and client preference. We'll continue to refine our skills and get those great early morning shots again at peak activity.

10:00 AM: Return to hotel

10:00 AM–2 PM: Break

2:00 PM–4:00 PM: Classroom session

4:30-8:00 PM: Sunset boat trip

Afternoon/sunset photo shoot to the Dot-Dash-Dit Colony at the mouth of the Braden River. Today we might want to approach our shooting in a different way as once we have all the flight images we need of each species we can start to think out of the box. By now you're familiar with the layout of the islands, have a better understanding of how to get those great flight shots so you can continue to hone those skills or you can fill in your portfolio with some more artistic imagery that Nikhil will inspire you with.

NOTE: This itinerary is subject to minor changes based on weather conditions. The plan is to have 6 boat sessions perfectly coordinated around favorable weather and lighting conditions. If we miss a boat session due to weather we will come up with an alternate plan and opt for a land-based shoot or additional classroom time.

Itinerary Includes:

  • Evening program on the 11th.
  • 6 boat-based shooting sessions (3 morning and 3 afternoon), weather depending.
  • Resident and licensed guide/boat drivers.
