Directions: The gardens are located off of Beulah Road, between Route 7 and Route 123, south of the Dulles Access Road. From the Beltway (I-495), take Route 7 toward Tysons Corner. Drive 3 miles west on Route 7, turn left onto Beulah Road and drive one mile to garden entrance on the right.

Photographing Winter

Description: The frigid winter temperatures offer some unique photographic opportunities. From a landscape covered in snow to an abstract close-up of ice, various oppurtunities available in the winter will be discussed. With these opportunities also come challenges. Tips on how to make the right exposure, protect your camera gear and protecting yourself will all be covered.

Introduction to Camera RAW
Date: Saturday, January 23

Description: Are you are considering shooting RAW instead of JPG? Are you fairly new to photographing in the RAW format? Or do you want to know how to process a RAW file? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this class is for you. The advantages and disadvantages of shooting in the JPG and RAW formats will be discussed. Why the optimal exposure for JPG v/s a RAW image is different will be explained. After that most of the time will be spent on the demo of how to process an image using the Adobe Camera RAW plug-in for Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.x. The demo will cover in detail how each slider affects your image.
Please note: For a complete understanding of how to process a photograph it is highly recommended you take this class before attending "Lightroom 2.x" or "Image Processing in Photoshop (Beyond Camera RAW)".

Beyond the Rules of Photography

Description: While the rules of photography are very helpful when learning, it's only when photographers start thinking beyond the rules that they can create unique images. This class focuses on creative compositions and camera techniques that help give your photographs a different look. How and when to break the rules successfully will be discussed as well.

Image Processing in Photoshop (Beyond Camera RAW)
Date: Saturday, March 6
Time: 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Tuition: $100
Description: Learn how to optimize your photographs using Adobe Photoshop. Whether you shoot in RAW or JPG format there is always a need to optimize the image after it has been captured in camera. Demonstrations will help you understand how various adjustments affect the image. Global and local adjustments that will be covered include: contrast, saturation, white balance, sharpening, noise reduction, dodging, burning, levels, curves, masks and more. Tips and techniques to optimize different types of images will also be included. Please note: this class does not encompass digital manipulation, such as, adding elements that were not part of the photographed scene.
Please note: Participants should have a working knowledge of Photoshop. It is it is highly recommended you attend the "Introduction to Camera RAW" class first.

Lightroom 2.x
Date: Sunday, March 7
Time: 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Tuition: $100
Description: Learn all the essentials of digital photography workflow using Lightroom 2.x. With Lightroom you can import, process, manage, and showcase your images. Most of the time will be spent on the very capable Library and Develop Modules and the Slideshow, Print and Web modules will also be covered.
The following are the main topics that will be covered in this 4 hour class.
- Understanding the LR catalog and digital asset management
- RAW processing capability
- Cataloging, archiving and keywording images
- Making and using templates and presets
- Using collections and smart collections
- Capture, creative and output sharpening
- Creating slideshows and web galleries.
Participants can bring a laptop computer to follow along.
Please note: The features of the develop module are almost the same as the Adobe Camera RAW plugin for Photoshop. While plenty of time will be dedicated to the develop module, if you want a more in depth understanding of how to process a photograph, please attend "Introduction to Camera RAW" class first.

Description: Almost every nature photographer makes Landscapes images. This class will cover all the essentials required to make strong Landscape images. From dramatic wide angle photos to using a long lens to isolate your subject, various ideas will be put forth. How to use light and different conditions to your advantage will also be discussed.

Photographing Water

Description: If you are a photographer that likes to interpret the same scene a different way then you will definitely appreciate the creative possibilities when photographing water. This class will cover techniques and ideas from different ways of photographing reflections to how changing the shutter speed affects the rendition of your photograph. Long exposures and the best times of day for the desired effect will be discussed. Depending on the weather there may be an additional field trip after the lecture. This will give you a chance to try out various techniques.
