Description: The wettest months along the coast of California are in the winter. Although, winter storms are generally short lived and can offer some great light and clouds. With no summer fog and the low angle of light during the winter months there are some great photographic opportunities. The rugged coastline of Big Sur is a photographer's delight! The rocky coast has sea stacks, arches, and one of only two waterfalls (in California) that cascade directly into the ocean. The iconic Point Lobos area is geologically unique and contains a rich and diverse plant and animal life both on shore and in the water. It is considered a crown jewel in the California state park system for good reason. The southern part of Monterey Bay is also one of the best locations to photograph sea otters and California sea lions.
On this workshop we will have opportunities to chase the light and work different areas along the northern coast of the Big Sur. There will be a special focus on working with water. From fast shutter speeds to freeze the waves to long exposures that render the water like a mist, you will learn how to control your shutter speeds and create images that are expressive. We will use the light to our advantage and create dynamic images of the coastline and intimate landscapes that catch the viewer's eye. Working early and late in the day, you will learn to photograph in low light and we may spend an evening photographing a starry sky (weather permitting). There will be at least one field session dedicated to photographing the sea otters and sea lions. There may be other opportunities to photograph some birds and wildlife but the focus will primarily be on coastal landscapes.
Classroom work will include a presentation on landscape photography, composition, and the various techniques that will be implemented during the workshop. Workflow and post-processing tips to get the most out of your RAW images will also be included. Group critique sessions will complete the workshop.
Participants should be able to do some light hiking over varied terrain.
